Wapawekka
West and Wert Lake Projects In the vicinity of the Wapawekka
Lake near La Ronge in central Saskatchewan Golconda
Resources has two exploration projects. The company staked over 13,000
hectares of mineral dispositions for its Wert Lake Project and its Wapawekka
West Project. The company drilled a
total of 15 exploration diamond drill holes through the overlying Phanerozoic sediments
into mafic units with a strong magnetic geophysical signature and identified a
new VHMS-district, which is most likely geologically linked to the Flin Flon
Belt. Deposit
type Golconda's
two projects are focusing on volcanic hosted massive sulphide (VHMS)-deposits in
the central Glennie domain. The geology, company observations and work by the
Geological Survey of Saskatchewan indicates that this structural domain is
linked to the Flin-Flon Belt, were numerous massive sulphide deposits are being
exploited over the last 50 years. Exploration
Success on the Wert Lake Project After
a detailed magnetic ground survey Golconda drilled six helicopter supported
exploration holes on their eastern Wapawekka Project (Wert Lake). Three holes
intersected at least two large massive sulphide lenses. The position of the
holes in combination with the ground survey suggests a strike length of over
1100 m. An apparent thickness of more than 70 m of VHMS was intersected.
Massive pyrite and pyrrhotite were the dominating sulphides. The assay results
gave an average of 0.1 % Cu and 0.3 % Zn and elevated gold and silver values.
The geology of this volcanic hosted massive sulphide occurrence and its
geochemistry is very similar to other well-known VHMS deposits. This type of
deposit occurs in clusters of massive sulphide bodies. The average massive
sulphide camp in Canada has about nine deposits. The future exploration program
will identify the center of the initially drilled massive (precious metal
containing) sulphides and additional VHMS occurrences on Golconda’s property. Core samples from 60 m massive sulphides intersection. Wapawekka
West Previously to the Wert Lake Project 8 exploration holes were drilled on the neighbouring Wapawekka West project. A total of 1850 m was drilled into the mafic basement. Assay results of some of the intersections returned 1.7 % Cu with 189 ppb Au over 1m interval, another one had 1.2% Cu and elevated gold values. This primary mineralization is hosted in ultramafic sills, which are most likely offshoots of a main source. Future
Exploration It is well known that VHMS deposits occur in clusters (mining districts). Therefore, it can be expected that additional massive sulphide mineralization will exist on Golconda’s Wapawekka property. Golconda’s initial exploration success of identifying a new VHMS-district will be continued by a closely spaced airborne survey followed by a drilling program during 2004.
